So, how does 22 feel?

large
source: weheartit.com

As of June 30th, I turned 22. Yikes! One of the newer perks of turning 22 is singing this song:

And people keep asking, how does it feel being 22?…well…

“we’re happy free confused and lonely at the same time” – Taylor Swift. That line sums it all up.

It’s like being 17 or 19. It’s an awkward age because there’s no milestone or right of passage that comes along with it. 15/16 in most cultures you’re considered a woman. You can vote and play the lotto at 18. You can drink at 21. After that, the only major ones are the incriments of five; 25, 30, 35, etc. Not a lot of people make a big deal of it. It’s like being 19, only with more responsibilities.

By now, you’re over the whole “omg I get to drink!!” phase when you were 21. Although I do enjoy a drink every now and then, that phase no longer excites me. By now you’ve voted in at least 1 or two elections. Depending on money and demographics. you already own a license/car. If all went to plan, you graduated college/will be soon.

It’s a different type of puberty phase than when you were an early adolescent. You’re expected to do more on your own; pay bills, earn a more serious job, really think about a career/marriage/family…and sometimes I feel like this commercial

You’re stuck in the middle between “still young according to the world” and “you’re old enough”. Still knowing teen slang but having a LinkedIn or copies of resumes in your bag. Can still shop in stores like Forever 21 (cause forever was only 365 days), but also needing to own “adult gear” like pantsuits and blazers. But your twenties are still your discovery years, your selfish years, the years where you really decide on what you will become. You’ve spent most of your teens years trying to discover who you are, what you’re good at. And now your 20s is your “what are you gonna do about it?’ phase. It’s a time to take yourself more seriously, but still find a balance to enjoy life. Your money is spent more on bills than sneakers. Your days of sleeping in during the summer are limited. You have more expectations and wish you were 5 again, getting to take daily naps.

All in all, the way I see 22 is another year to better yourself. Let that be the year you do something beneficial for yourself like learn a new skill, get that licence, go back to school, make new friends and let go of toxic ones, find that special someone or take on more responsibilities than expected. Make it a milestone for you personally and not let the age go to waste. There’s no explicit expectations of being 22, so you whatever you feel like! (As long as it’s an improvement) Make a list of goals to complete before your next birthday to make it memorable. If not, you still have 2 more awkward birthdays until 25!

“Another year older, another year wiser”

Maybe that’s what TSwizzle meant…do kids still call her that?

Nonetheless, if you need me, I’ll be making student loan payments while singing Disney songs and sipping on a Capri Sun…I think I got it right.

Unbreakable Smile by Tori Kelly in Review

If you haven’t heard of God’s gift to the music industry, you will now. Tori Kelly has been patiently waiting to take over the music world and this has been her year. You may have seen or heard her on Late night shows and music awards over the past few months, but do you really know who this golden locked beauty is?

Victoria (Tori) Kelly was born on December 14, 1992 born and raised in California. She’s had early dreams to be a musician. Like many artists this day and age, she gained recognition and approval from fans by posting her songs on YouTube. This collab in particular gained a lot of attention to Tori with Angie Girl

Other YouTube artists took notice of her and made covers/collabs of her songs

When she was 16, she auditioned for American Idol. Sadly she was eliminated, but it slowly became a blessing in disguise for her. She continued to work on her music, staying true to her identity and love of music, despite the hardships of it all. She made her own record label called Toraay records and released her first EP called Handmade Songs . She also created Forward in 2013 with songs such as Dear No One and Daydream that made me fall in love with her. Tori and Scooter Braun eventually met and he became her manager. She was hesitant at first, but she felt that she made the right decision. With all of this, Unbreakable Smile was born.

So why should you listen to Unbreakable Smile? It brings back that wholesome feelings that everyone can relate to, from love, heartache, and being true to yourself. Now an album may sound super cliche, but the way Tori sings and performs these songs really get you on all levels. Complete with catchy beats, amazing collabs from LL Cool J (you read that right!) and Ed Sheeran, and lyrics that just make you want that to be your next IG caption or Tweet. The way she sings about love makes you want to believe in love again, no matter how many times you’ve given up on it. It brings you to that deeper side of love that some musicians avoid, the one that shows intimacy of mind, emotion and soul. She spoke about the album on her website saying: “It’s like a marriage between that soulful urban thing and a mainstream pop vibe. It was hard to get to that place, but once we had ‘Nobody Love,’ I knew we’d cracked the code. It felt seamless.” I couldn’t have said it better myself

These songs are a testimony of her life, how she has handled love, lost love, where she is, and where she is going to be. Like most of us, we don’t know where we’ll end up, but we’re exited for the journey. Here are some of the lyrics that just caught my attention:

Unbreakable Smile:

Saying, Tori this’ll sell more records
But I’d rather make ’em yawn than be a pawn on your chessboard
So call me boring, call me cookie cutter, call me what you want
A matter of fact, just say it loud and don’t st-stutter
‘Cause I know who I am, yeah I’m still the same
Just a California girl with big dreams
Thinking maybe they’ll let me sing songs about real things
And baby who knows maybe I can sell out shows without taking off my clothes
God made me sexy I don’t care if only I know

City Dove

City dove, fly between the buildings and fences
Soft inside but rough on the edges
Waiting here for something to come just holdin’ on

Art Of Letting You Go

Your love stayed in the back of my head
In a house full of a memories is where I lived
Right when I came home, oh no, there I go
Saw you again and I can’t even pretend

First Heartbreak

‘Cause for the first time I get worried
when I’m lookin’ in your eyes
that one day you might leave me
and it keeps me up at night
I guess that means I really love you
’cause I’m afraid to make mistakes
if you ever left me that would be my first heartbreak

I can keep on, but then I’d give away the whole album! But this album is one the more refreshing albums in a world that’s full of songs about violence, booty call sex, and other stuff. Slowly, there are artists that are using their music to really express themselves and connect to their fans on a more intimate level. Speaking about identity, the issues going on in the world, and just bringing back that old-school love. This is just a small stepping stone for Tori Kelly and only the beginning of her taking on the world, one song at a time.

Here are some of her songs from the new album if you’re still not convinced:

Treat yourself – Solo date night

I think you know where this is going by the title of the post. Many single people, especially in the summer are looking for someone to enjoy the season with, even getting into a relationship with. Does that always work out? Not really. In my case especially, I usually end up definitively single before the 4th of July. But does that mean you can’t enjoy yourself? ABSOLUTELY NOT! As Aziz says; “Treat yo self!”

So what does it mean to treat yourself? It means to enjoy being in the company of…well yourself! Who better than you since you’re so awesome?! Solo ‘treat yo self’ dates are important for you in so many ways.

First off, it helps you become content with yourself and you can grow to love yourself more. I stress this beyond belief.  No relationship will be as fruitful as you want it if you do not love yourself first. It’s important to love and treat yourself the way you want others to treat you. You accept the love you think you deserve and you deserve the best!  Second, it helps you learn more about yourself, such as your talents, strengths and weaknesses and it give you room to learn and grow. You also learn that you don’t need someone to treat you to the material things of the world, you can buy those things yourself and in turn, you realize and appreciate those in your life that spoil you more with memories than with gifts. (But a gift here and there isn’t that bad lol). And finally, it gives you the freedom to choose what you want to do, how you want to do it and when.

So how can you treat yourself?:

Inside pamper day!

Take this day or night, stay home and literally treat yo self to take care of your body! Do your nails/toes, take a soothing bath and doing a face and or hair mask! There’s never really much time or money to be going out to do these and who knows? You might end up being a pro at it!

Check out her DIY masks

Also take the time to make your favorite meals…or order in lol whatever works for you. Sometimes it’s fun to make a mess in the kitchen (as long as you clean it up) and learn all the fun and tasty things you can make with what’s already in your fridge! I’m obsessed with Spoon University from NYU they have sooo many good things to try. And if you’re not kitchen savvy, well Ben & Jerry’s and Talenti never fail a girl!

Cleaning!

Now, how does cleaning count as treat yourself? For some like me, I find cleaning to be very very therapeutic. To be in a clean and organized room really relaxes you and you get to find things you thought you lost!! Also you get inspired to redecorate the place and Pinterest never fails to inspire me! Get some candles, air fresheners and pretty things that gives your room more life and in turn, you’ll be having some good vibes!

Shopping!

Nothing says treat yo self better than adding to your wardrobe and makeup arsenal!! If you look good, you feel good, right? Shopping at your favorite stores, spending time in that dressing room and trying out all the makeup samples are vital in a day off for yourself! And also treat yourself to the sweets nearby too!

Above all and most importantly, remember all the good traits about yourself. Never forget the good that you bring to the table and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. If they won’t spoil you, you can spoil yourself!

Happy solo night!

Con mucho amor,

Who to Watch- D-Pryde aka Pryde

D-Pryde
Credit: Thatsenuff.com

Okay so story time. Once upon a time, a guy I dated asked me if I ever heard of D-Pryde. I had no clue who he was or what was going to follow after that response. So he goes on to sing me this song below

And I was hooked. I went on his YouTube channel and pretty much saw every single video that had to do with him. Followed him on Twitter, saw his tags on  Tumblr and pretty much could sing back any song lyric he’s done. So of course, we gotta share a good thing! Couldn’t keep this all to myself lol

So who exactly is Pryde?

Russell was born in 1993 (hey me too!) and from Ontario, Canada. He’s a Filipino which he says that it’s pretty difficult to be an Asian rapper in this day and age. But he seems to have done this effortlessly since he is now signed with BMG Rights Management. Like many of us, he’s had his fair share of struggles, such as family, friends, love, and the pursuit of being successful. Taking all of his life lessons and combining it into songs that just pretty much speak to the soul.

In 2011, Pryde went on a tour around Canada alongside J-Cole. Yeah, that’s a pretty big deal lol. He signed to BMG in December 2012. His EP “Canal and Richvale” in the summer of 2013, collaborating with August Rigo in “Ridin Thru LA”. His list of mixtapes include “Flagship”, “Rollin”, “Plan A” and has released  “Richvale Summer”  on June 3rd! Yaay! One of the songs, Day One, was just recently released on May 26, with all of his fans Tweeting #DayOne in excitement (myself included)

So that’s what he’s done. But who is he?

tumblr_m64p7itXdL1qiv6zmo1_500
Credit: tumblr.com

He’s real, he’s legit, he speaks facts and he has a way with words. If you just take the time to see how he uses his words in his covers and originals many times beat the original song and make you want to replay the songs 1,000 times. His words are simple, but they mean so much to the listener. He is a great storyteller and he places his all in his songs. You can tell from the get-go that he is passionate about this as a career. He’s humble and doesn’t try to be anyone but himself and really connects to his fans. He shares personal stories about love, his mother’s passing and his father’s absence. He brings his fans and listeners to his world and the fans couldn’t be anymore happier with it.

Below are some of my favorite songs that he’s done

You know when people are called to a certain career, and without a doubt, Pryde belongs in the music business! Best of luck Pryde!

Follow him on YouTube and Twitter and start off your weekend with Pryde!

8 things I’ve learned while I was in College

maxresdefault
Credit: theodysseyonline.com

So I have been a college grad for about two weeks, and I have to admit, it still hasn’t hit me. probably since I have to go back to get my masters’ soon it’s a little bit different for me. Nevertheless, college was a completely different experience from high school and here are a few things I’ve learned in my four years.

There isn’t one way to have a “College experience”

I dormed the first two years of college and commuted the last two years. I spent most weekends home because of ministry, formation and teaching so I got some backlash for not having the full experience. Dorming was an experience all on it’s own, but it’s not the only thing college has to offer. If you don’t get involved, stay around and meet new people and do things, you won’t really get much of a college experience. That experience is also different for everyone. Many want to go to all of the bars, frat parties and any other social event and that suffices for them. The typical “I Love College” song comes to mind. Others take more advantage of the academic opportunities, such as study abroad, presenting research at other events. Some may do a mix of both, and the list goes on. Every person is different and takes college on in different ways so in one way or another, they all have a different college experience.

When you dorm, you learn a lot about yourself

The two years that I dormed showed me how much I had to rely on myself. Mom wasn’t around to clean or do laundry, or even make me rice. So I had to learn to make my own personal schedule, when I would do laundry, when I would cook or go out, cause let’s be honest, there’s only so many times I can eat pizza and chinos. I also learned the hard way which pots are bad to make rice in….

Also the topic of roommates. I was fortunate to only have one roommate each year I dormed. We got along really well cause we set rules and guidelines from the beginning and always communicated. Sometimes you hear crazy stories about roommates arguing to the point of one even leaving the school, which happened a few doors down from me. Another thing to keep in mind is that you don’t have to be with your roommate every second, you two can lead your own different lives and that’s okay, it’s even healthy! Especially to get to know other people that dorm or commute, especially the rest of the people on your floor!

You learn to be more self-sufficient and self-accountable

Again, many of this comes through dorming, but I’ll expand. When you dorm, you have to do your laundry, cook or order out, clean your dorm, go to the campus clinic if you feel sick, etc. But there’s more to this that applies to both commuters and dormers. You make your own schedule. You choose what classes and when you’re going to take them. So obviously, you should go to class and get the work done. It’s different from HS, instead of 8 classes 5x a week, you have 2 classes 3x a week or 1 class 2x a week, depending. So it becomes your responsibility to organize your time accordingly. Especially at a bigger campus, there isn’t that opportunity for friendly reminders and one on one treatment. You have to get those projects in on time, cause some professors don’t care about bid night or that frat party, gotta find that balance! Procrastination is not fun and all and comes with a vengeance when you’re in college!

Involvement is important and sometimes stressful

It’s not fun to just go to class and then leave, you’d want to get involved with causes and organizations your care about and meet other people! So it’s great to get involved, it’s a good thing, but some won’t see it that way. Although some people like their free time, sitting in the lounge for two hours just isn’t my style, especially when there are things to do. Some may not like the fact that you’re always busy, but they should understand why, as well as you make time for them during the week. Especially those who pledge would understand this, but as long as you find a balance between school, work and friends, you can get involved as much as you can! If you can find a job, it’s even better! Again, it’s all about balance

IT’S OKAY TO ASK FOR HELP

I place this in all caps for a reason. College is stressful, there’s no doubt about it. Trying to manage between all of these classes, events and your sanity can take a toll on you mentally, financially, academically, and even physically. Don’t let your pride get in the way of your well-being. It’s okay to get a tutor for a class you’re struggling with. It’s okay to see the school counselor about your anxiety and worries about school. Don’t feel as if you have to do this all by yourself, because it is impossible to do all of this and feel at peace. It’s okay to cry, have a breakdown (or 2), but you have to get back up and continue the journey

Connect with those in your field

It’s a great advantage and support because these people know exactly what you’re going through. Some people may think that your major is easy but bruh, they don’t even know the half of it. But you have people to understand the struggles. It’s good to keep them around for support, guidance and even connections for the future! So be kind!

Going beyond the minimum

If you came to college for an easy ride, good luck with that. It’s good to be challenged and see what you can do. So take on that minor, double major if you can. Participate in research projects and do studies. Become a student leader and be exceptional at it. Take internships and workshops to help you stand out. It really shows what you’re capable of and how much you can accomplish. It gives you a sense of pride in knowing “I did that”. The skills and experiences that come from these can only help you in the real world.

Only a few day ones stand besides you

It’s kinda like high school in a sense; freshman year everyone’s your friend and the circle gets smaller with each year. And that’s okay. Not everyone is meant to be in your life forever and don’t feel like it’s something you did. Sometimes that may be the case, but also people drift apart cause of life, distance and career paths. Don’t mourn over who was lost in the circle, but be thankful for the ones that stayed. The few. The loyal. The best.

If you have any other things you’ve learned, please comment below!

Speaking Spanglish

keep-calm-and-speak-spanglish-4

(credit: Paula, keepcalm-o-matic.co.uk)

If you’ve lived in NY or have been around native Spanish speakers, then you’ve heard Spanglish before. Simply put, it’s when a person uses both English and Spanish in the same sentence. Not everyone loves Spanglish. They say things like:

  • They don’t even know both languages well
  • They’re mixing up their languages
  • Learning more than one language confuses the child
  • “This is America, speak English”

Ha. That last one is my personal favorite. If we want to get technical, there is no official language in the U.S. Obviously, English is the dominant language, but with the diversity of America in this day and age, you’re bound to hear another language. You’ve all heard the many benefits of learning more than one language, such as:

  • Better cognition skills
  • Looking more marketable in the workplace
  • Delays Alzheimer’s by 3 years

The list goes on. So why do people speak Spanglish? Ana Celia Zentella dedicated a whole book called Growing Up Bilingual on how Puerto Rican girls acquired English and how they feel about speaking Spanglish. Many of them (myself included) feel a sense of pride when speaking Spanglish. Not only are many children bilingual, but they are bi-cultural as well, which you can read my post here. Being immersed in two cultures comes with two languages. If you know someone who is bilingual as well, it gives you a sense of comfort and solidarity in it.

Speaking Spanglish is not just throwing random Spanish words here and there, you still have to follow grammatical structure of the languages. For example:

Dame ese libro over there

She left me alone and I felt like a tonta!

Ese computadora es too expensive

If you were to literally translate it into fully English, it would still make sense. Many bilinguals prefer certain words in Spanish than in English. Personally, I prefer the word malleta over suitcase/luggage, and gabetero over cabinets. So when my monolingual friends hear malleta, sometimes they have to use context clues or straight up ask me what that word was! Bilinguals are very much aware of what language they are speaking, so they are not confused. At times, certain words slip or we forget the word in English and we make a quick substitution, but nonetheless, we have control over each language and we’re smart enough to use both at the same time!

So what are your thoughts on Spanglish? Do you love it or hate it? Do you speak it often or none at all?

Happy 10th, 15th & 20th birthday to your favorite songs – Throwback Thursday!

We always hear a song from back in the day and think, “wow! that’s an old song!” But do you know how old that song is? Some of the songs that we’ve come to know and love are as old as high schoolers, even some as old as us!

Inspired by watching this video (and getting almost all of these right), I’ve decided to shed some light as to which songs have major birthdays this year, turning 10, 15 and 20 years old!

Happy 10th Birthday To YOU!

Gwen Stefani- Hollaback Girl

A response to a comment Courtney Love made gave us this anthem that even to this day gets us dancing! Many of us can admit that we sing this song when we spell “Bananas” (like I did just now) lol

Kanye West ft Jamie Foxx- Gold Digger

We love to think that Kanye is timeless, and in every sense he is, but this song came out 10 years ago, before most of us even knew what a gold digger was….

1,2 Step- Ciara Ft. Missy Elliot

This dynamic collab of Missy and Ciara made this song the hit that it was 10 years ago. It was in every birthday party, skate rink and music station (peep B5 in the video though)

Rihanna- Pon De Replay

Aww, when Ri-Ri first stepped on the scene and stole our hearts, can you believe this was 10 years ago? How time flies!

The Killers- Mr. Brightside

“Coming out of my cage and I’ve been doing just fine..,” and most of you can finish the song on your own. I know for sure this was my song when I was growing up!

A complete list of our 10 year old songs are here

Happy 15th Birthday to YOUU!!

‘N Sync- Bye Bye Bye

Yes Ladies, our favorite song and dance are 15 years old! The song that was pretty much the hit of the 2000s will forever be timeless in our hearts and our children will know this dance/song (at least mine will)

Britney Spears- Lucky

How I still know the lyrics to this song after 15 years of not listening to this is beyond me! Britney pretty much took over the 2000s alongside Nsync. This song was seriously underrated and one of my favorites.

Baha Men- Who Let the Dogs Out?

The age old question that I will never know until I ask God himself. This song was played in almost every movie, radio station, and party. You love it, you hate it, it’s been a rough 15 years (see what I did there? noo.. okay lol)

Nine Days- Absolutely (Story of a Girl)

“THIS IS A STORY OF A GIRL….who cried a river and drowned the whole world!!” Stop it, you know the song, and you LOVE IT

Nelly Furtado- I’m Like a Bird

This was every girl’s jam, bringing out the hippie free bird in all of us, just trying to break free from the world. I hope that she found her soul and her home, or is she still looking?!

Continued list of our 15 year old songs here

Happy 20th Birthday to YOUU!!

Coolio ft. LV – Gangstas Paradise

We all swore that we were hood singing this song, but we really weren’t. Especially because this song came out when I was two…

Montell Jordan- This is How We Do It

Oh you were dancing before you clicked the video, this song still comes along the radio and everyone can’t help but dance to it! Still a great club banger cause That’s how you’re supposed to do it!

TLC- Waterfalls

It’s a great song with timeless lyrics and messages and these women would forever change the face of female groups and musicians. Left Eye, you’re still missed

Mariah Carey – Fantasy

Can our music and music videos come back to this?! So simple, authentic and lovely! It makes me miss the summer going outside and rollerblading

Full List of our 20 year olds here

Hope you didn’t feel too old (or young) reading this list, but for us 20 somethings (and late teenagers) had a nice trip down memory lane. If there are any songs that didn’t make this list, please comment below!

Welcome back Baseball!!!

images
source: http://brandthunder.com/

Finally the brutal winter is over, there is no snow on the ground and it’s 63 degrees, and the stadiums are open! For those who know me, I’m the biggest baseball fan this side of the Bronx, and this is like Christmas for me!

One of the things I love about baseball is the un-expectancy of it all. If a pitch is just a little bit off, it can be the difference between a strikeout or a grand slam. It is such a suspenseful sport, especially between the pitcher and batter and the plays are literally out of this world! Each stadium has their own feel and atmosphere and can make the game much more entertaining. Although I’m a Yankee fan first, being in Citi Field watching the Mets is a such an awesome time with the fans and the events that they give to everyone (and they also have Shake Shack)

Here are some facts about baseball that you should know for this year

  • This is the first year that Derek Jeter is NOT in a Yankee uniform (tears)
  • This year’s All Star Game is July 14th in Great American Ballpark (Cincinnati, Ohio)
  • Alex Rodriguez has returned in a Yankee uniform after a 162 game suspension
  • Mets’ Matt Harvey and Marlins’ Jose Fernandez have returned after Tommy John surgery (yaaaaaaasssss)

Highlights of some of the best baseball movies

Pitcher’s got a big butt – Rookie Of The Year

Fundamentals – Angels In the Outfield

Wild Thing – Major League

You Play Ball Like a Girl! – The Sandlot

Here are some baseball facts from Buzzfeed

Without a doubt, Baseball is loved by all; we’ve all had a game of catch or played on a baseball team or went out to a baseball game with a beer with buddies and let’s all appreciate what a great sport that is back into our lives!

If you have any reasons why you love baseball, please comment and tell me your predictions for this year’s World Series!

Remembering Selena Quintanilla-Perez

Today will make 20 years that the world lost a beloved and talented songbird, Selena Quintanilla Perez. Selena was a native of Corpus Cristi, Texas and was of Mexican heritage. Teaming up with her family members, they performed in countless venues at an early age with the help of their father as their manager. They went on to become Selena y Los Dinos. Non family member Chris Perez soon joined the band, as well as the family, by marrying Selena in 1992. She was shot by her fan club manager and confidant, Yolanda Saldivar, while being confronted over embezzlement. Selena suffered a cardiac arrest and died soon after.

Although I was too young to know about her when she was alive, her memory still lived on in my family as well as the media. She because such a role model for me with her lovely personality, sense of style and dedication to her passion. I read her book written by Chris, To Selena, With Love, and cried with each page. She loved her music and her fans so so much that even now, many fans and family of Selena still are saddened by this tragedy.

But instead of mourning her death, this post is dedicated to celebrating her life and her mark made on the world!

Her fashion sense!

No matter what you say, this Tejano queen did it all first! The looks and styles that are still around were first inspired by our Selena!

Her dance moves

Selena had the moves and then some! She was the total package as an entertainer and her shows were always worth the money!

And her twirls were my dance goals

She loved food as much as we all did and wasn’t afraid to show it!

She had hit after hit, success after success

which included

  • Best Mexican American Album
  • Nine time Best Female Vocalist at the Tejano music awards
  • Amor Prohibido became the top selling Latin album of all time
  • Then her post humorous album, Dreaming of You topped Amor Prohibido
  • Selena Live! Won Best Mexican-American Album (36th Grammy Awards)
  • Best Mexican American Album was Amor Prohibido (37th Grammy Awards)

Missing Myspace – Throwback Thursdays

I ran into this video a while ago, and it made me laugh, as well as reminisce about the good old days of MySpace. If some of you have nooo idea what I’m talking about, it was pretty much what came before Facebook, and to be honest, it was sooo much more creative than Facebook. What it has become now was nothing like it was before. Here are some reasons as to why some of us love/miss Myspace and take a trip down memory lane.

Your own personalized page

There was no other page like yours. Your layouts and backgrounds were a reflection of your personality. Your about me was spot on (especially your hacks) and your playlist was the absolute jam. You had total control of what you wanted your page to look like and feel like. You can share as little or as much information as you pleased. Whatever the look or style you went for, there was a layout for that. Wanted to tell the world you were in love? Layout for that. Single? There’s a layout for that. Want to show off your flag or your team? Layout for that!. I used to spend hours looking for that perfect layout with the edits I wanted, I’m sure my parents were worried, but they never showed it. If your favorite artist had a Myspace page, you can have their songs on your page for you and your friends to jam out to. My phases and music changed from Fall Out Boy to Jowell Y Randy. You could even add graphics such as quotes, flag, cartoons, anything you wanted. It was literally your space.

Your top friends were a big deal

Making your top friends list was a big deal. Your place on your friends and family’s top said a lot (then again, we were all like 13 and everything was a big deal). But your top 4-8 were pretty much dubbed “the best of the best”. My top 4 were almost always family and the next 4 were more family and my 2 best friends. There was that brief moment where I had a “boyfriend” and I had to put him as like #3, but his top was hidden (soo annoying). But nonetheless, you knew where you stood and you knew where other people stood based on that top friends list. But Tom would always be your first friend.

That HORRIBLE Language hieroglyphic system we had

Th@nKz 4 d@ lUv3! wHy d!d w3 3v@ wR!t3 l!k3 d!z?!? I’ll admit, I did this for like a month and I just couldn’t take it anymore. This I don’t miss, but it was insane to know that this was a legit thing. Girls always had a tendency to place extra letters and symbols for everthing. Case in point: && ii promise to luv youu foreveeerrr x333. Every girl thing ended in x3 or <33 and I don’t get it. Again, guilty for like 2 months with my nicknames like Giigglez and bxcutiie….to my 13 year old self, you didn’t know any better…

Everyone wanted “owns, shares, hacks and S4S, pic for pics”

“I ownz this pic! No steals!” “Cutii3 piie ownz! no sharin!” Forget likes! it was all about the COMMENTS! You wanted people to fight for the right to own your pic, and it made you feel better about yourself, your picture was valuable. I had one picture where one person owned my head, another owned my coffee and another owned my shoes. Bruh, this was serious business here.

My favorite had to be the “about me hacks” this one was my best friend’s hack about me (had to get rid of certain inside jokes)

hiiiiiii ;p ! . this is one of Stephanie’s many friendssss. Nati. well welll Stephanie is not 100 percent normall. but jeaa wanna noe if she’s single or taken? how bout u go ASK her. yankees;sidekick;dancing bachata&churchhh is a great part of her her life haha. she’s an undercover flirt. =0
if u give her platanos 4 her bday she’ll be ur best friend 4 everr &ever. ummm yeaaa she can put a smile on ur face most of the timesss. (shes corney  not cornier than me tho muahhaha >:) ]_byeeeeeeeee ! ❤

Again, clear disregard for grammar and excessive letters, but it’s all good.

You could also tell your friends to follow their friends with share for shares, pics for pics and all that other fun stuff. Must admit that the people who would promote themselves and others had a pretty awesome talent at photoshop…at the age of like 12….did we ever go outside? It’s a blur.

Oh Myspace, you’ve taught us all a valuable lesson on what it means when we say we shouldn’t go back to those middle school days lest we want to drown in embarrassment again, I can’t complain too much about myself personally, my Myspace was always a pretty good page, I wasn’t that crazy or reckless but I think progression in better. What were some of the things you’ve missed from the Myspace days? comment below!

Con mucho amor,
